Reyhaneh and Mahdi Zakeri were sister and brother. Reyhaneh was in fourth grade, and Mahdi was in third grade.
The only story found about these two innocent children is small, but deeply painful. They each had a piggy bank. Every year, during the family’s summer trip to Mashhad, they would open those savings and spend the money there.
This year, they were not there to open them.
In their absence, their family donated the piggy banks to the shrine.
What had once been saved for a child’s joy became an offering in their memory. Reyhaneh and Mahdi did not reach that summer journey, but the coins they had gathered still traveled where their little hands had hoped to take them.
