The Teachers Who Stayed

The attack on Iran began on a beautiful day, but it came with treachery and without warning, in the midst of negotiations. For the teachers of Shajareh Tayyebeh School, however, the danger was no longer abstract. From the first moments of war until the hour of their martyrdom, they knew that death was drawing near. They had the chance to flee. They had the right to save themselves. Yet they stayed.

They stayed so that courage would not remain merely a word. They stayed so that selflessness would have a face, a voice, and a body standing between children and death. They stayed because they believed that no teacher could go home while her students were still waiting to be saved.

Some of these women had their own children with them at the school that day. But in that moment of fear and fire, they made no distinction between their own children and the children entrusted to them by other families. They became mothers to all. They became shields. They became the last refuge of the children of Shajareh Tayyebeh.

This chapter honors those women: the teachers who stayed, the women who did not abandon their students, and the brave souls whose final lesson was not written on a blackboard, but in sacrifice.
