The Children Whose Stories Were Taken

The scale of the massacre at Shajareh Tayyebeh School was so vast, and the depth of the tragedy so overwhelming that collecting the details of every life lost requires time, patience, and many voices. Journalists, families, and those who have carried out the burden of memory have begun gathering interviews, photographs, and fragments from the lives of the martyrs. Wherever we found such details, we included them in this book.

But for some of the children and teachers who were killed, we still had no personal account available at the time of writing. This absence of information must never be mistaken for anonymity. A missing story does not mean a missing life. Each name belonged to a face, a family, a home, a classroom, a voice, a dream, and a future that was violently taken away.

The fact that we do not yet know enough about them does not mean they should remain unknown. It means that part of the wound is still open. It means that memory has not finished its work.

If more information becomes available in the future, this book should be expanded and updated. For now, this chapter gathers what we have been able to find: names, images, and traces of lives that must not be reduced to numbers.

These are the children whose stories were taken from them. Yet even where the story is incomplete, their humanity is not.
